The Pattern Theory met through a common love of instrumental music and a desire to combine the beauty of rhythmical complexity with the emotional impact of minimal harmonies and melodies. Formed in Leeds, England in spring 2007 they self-released their first EP (EP1), which received excellent reviews and extensive radio play (including Steve Lamacq’s BBC Radio One show).

They have toured the UK and Germany and have shared stages with Icy Demons, Adem and The Drift. Damo Suzuki chose them as his backing band on his world tour, accompanying him with a fully improvised set.

Live, The Pattern Theory play six instruments simultaneously, with no backing tracks being used at any point. Recently, they relocated to Berlin, Germany where they have recorded their debut album. Outside of The Pattern Theory, James drums for The Declining Winter (Hood side project), Carl works with Andrew McInnis (ex-Asva, a Sunn O))) side project) and Lukas plays with Tanita Tikaram.
